Auto molest

Thane, Jan. 4 (PTI): A teenaged girl jumped out of a moving auto yesterday after three men allegedly tried to molest and kidnap her in Mumbra township, police said.

The 17-year-old had boarded the vehicle on a shared basis with two men. However, the driver took a different route and the men tried to molest her before she jumped out. The girl has lodged a complaint against the three unidentified men.

Insider trading

New York (PTI): An Indian-origin hedge fund manager has pleaded not guilty to charges that he participated in one of the “most lucrative” insider trading schemes in the US, involving $276 million. Mathew Martoma was held for using materials and non-public information on the clinical trial of an Alzheimer’s drug to make profits.

Runaway boy

New Delhi (PTI): A Class XII student of a Delhi school staged his own abduction, heading off to Calcutta after classes on December 21 and making a ransom call for Rs 3 crore two days later. A police team, who tracked his mobile to Calcutta, visited the city but could not find him. But the teen, whose father is a doctor, felt sorry for what he had done and returned to Delhi, where he was found loitering at the Old Delhi station on Thursday and detained by police. He broke and confessed, a senior police officer said. He was unhappy because he was not getting enough pocket money.

Baby in drain

Beed (PTI): A 30-year-old woman has been detained for allegedly dumping her newborn girl in a drain, Maharashtra police said. The police said the woman claimed the baby was stillborn. The body has been sent for autopsy. The police added it was yet to be ascertained as to when the child was delivered.

Kite festival

Gandhinagar (PTI): The 25th annual International Kite Festival of Gujarat, which will begin on Monday, will be hosted outside the state for the first time. The festival will be held in Mumbai and Delhi apart from some cities in Gujarat. Over 100 kite flyers from 40 countries will take part in the event.

SC on khaps

New Delhi, Jan. 4 (PTI): The Supreme Court today invited khap panchayats to hear their views before issuing any order to stop them from harassing and killing couples in the name of family honour.

ch of the apex court said: “We would be more satisfied if we get views from the khaps. At moment we are hearing views which are hostile to them.” The bench added: “We do not want to fall into the act of giving a dog a bad name and hang it.”

Toddler dead

Dhar (PTI): A two- year-old girl suffering from breathlessness died on Friday after the oxygen cylinder in the ambulance that was shifting her to Indore exhausted enroute. The collector has ordered a probe into the neglience by the hospital.

Slur on bank

New Delhi (PTI): A consumer forum has ordered Canara Bank to pay Rs 25,000 as compensation to a former employee for charging an excess of Rs 2,228 towards the interest of his housing loan. The forum found the bank had caused harassment to the account holder and held it deficient in service.

Techie death

Pune (PTI): A 30-year-old woman employee of IBM committed suicide on Friday by jumping from the seventh floor of an office building, police said. Archana Basar, mother of two, did not leave a suicide note and a probe has been order, the police added.

Shoe hurling

Aurangabad (PTI): A woman constable who hurled a shoe at a senior police officer on Thursday for allegedly sending her lewd SMS’s has been suspended, officials said. The police had conducted a probe and transferred one of the three officers named in the constable’s complaint.

Zee verdict

New Delhi (PTI): A court on Saturday will give a verdict on two Zee News editor’s plea to stop police from taking their voice samples for a sting done by officials of Congress MP Naveen Jindal’s firm to prove their alleged roles in the Rs 100 crore extortion bid. The editor’s have opposed reading from the sting transcripts.
