A stooge of an “influential” Jamshedpur contractor tried to outrage the modesty of a 13-year-old girl at her home in Kadma on Thursday evening, but has so far managed to escape the proverbial long arm of the law.
The absconding youth and his five friends, who also thrashed the victim’s father and threatened to rape all his three daughters, invited the wrath of local residents who demonstrated in front of Kadma police station for an hour on Friday morning.
Family members said the Class IX student was resting in her room at their Ramnagar home in Kadma around 6pm on Thursday. Suddenly, she realised that someone was tugging at her blanket and trying to grope her.
She opened her eyes to see a youth — identified as contractor Dipu Singh’s man Gautam — sitting by her bed. Her terrified scream brought father Sushil Prasad, who was watching television in another room, to her rescue.
Seeing Prasad, the 27-year-old fled, but only to return with five others, all recruits of Dipu Singh (40).
“They barged into our home and dragged by husband out, beating him mercilessly,” said the mother of the 13-year-old, who has two elder sisters aged 16 and 18.
“After half an hour or so, the contractor turned up. This was like moral support for his men who threatened to rape all my three daughters if we did not sell our home and leave the area within a month,” the anxious mother said.
She added that there was no dispute involving their house that might have spurred the twin attacks on her family.
“I was away from home, along with my eldest daughter, to attend a religious discourse. When I heard what had happened, I decided to go to police though I knew the contractor had money and muscle power,” the gutsy woman said.
Around 10.30pm on Thursday, the girl’s family members and neighbours turned up at Kadma police station and lodged a complaint against the seven, including Singh and Gautam. But, the ordeal is yet to end for the victim.
“Though we submitted a written complaint, police have not arrested any of the culprits. We are here to protest their inaction,” the victim’s mother said, adding that the gang of rogues had an office very close to their house.
Prasad echoed his wife, claiming that Singh had political clout. “As long as Dipu Singh and his men are at large, we are not safe. I am afraid, they may attack me and my family members once again,” the man, who works in a private company, said.
Neighbours supported the victim, saying the contractor and his henchmen were big trouble for the locality, but police didn’t act.
Kadma OC sub-inspector Raju Thakur claimed that they had raided the Ramnagar office of the contractor and also houses of the accused, but all seven were absconding.
“Yesterday, the FIR was lodged hurriedly, which left several important points untouched. The victim’s mother was asked to lodge a fresh FIR today. The accused have been charged under Sections 376 and 511 (attempted rape) and Section 323 (assault). They will be arrested very soon,” the officer added.
