Snatcher caught by alert residents

A youth who snatched a gold chain and tried to flee by boarding a moving bus was pulled down by local residents near Sovabazar Metro station on Friday and handed over to police.

The 14.5 g chain, which police said was worth nearly Rs 45,000, was recovered.

Sharmila Shaw, 30, a homemaker, was walking towards her home on Nabakrishna Road around 5.30pm when the youth, Mohammed Nasim, snatched her gold chain from behind and started running towards Bagbazar.

The woman raised the alarm and passers-by gave chase. “The youth snaked through the crowd and managed to grab the door handle of a running bus. But a group of men chasing him pulled him off the bus just in time,” said a senior officer at Shyampukur police station. “Our officials in civil dress had also joined the chase. We arrested the youth and recovered the chain.”
