Cuttack bus owner killed

Cuttack, Jan. 3: Tension gripped Link Road in the city after some criminals shot a bus owner dead in the evening. The deceased was identified as Jaydev Rout, 45, of Shankarpur Barik Sahi.

Sources said Rout, who had recently bought a bus, was shot by four motorcycle-borne goons, who fired at him from a close range.

The incident occurred around 7.30pm, when Rout had gone to collect the day’s proceeds of his bus from a place near Arunodaya Market.

Police said two youths had called Rout, when he was talking with one of his employees, and fired indiscriminately at him.

Rout, who took two bullets, including one to the head, was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, he died on the way to hospital.

“The patient had sustained multiple injuries to the face, head and neck and was brought dead,” said SCB casualty medical officer Debasis Barik.

It is suspected that Rout was killed over past rivalry. Though his family members suspect that it could be a case of business rivalry, they refused to go on record about it.

Sources said Rout had been working as bus supervisor for the past 10 years. Only a couple of months ago, he had bought a bus and was operating it in the twin cities.

The police, too, suspect it to be a case of previous enmity but refused to say anything officially in connection with the killing. However, sources said two of the accused involved in the firing had been identified and efforts were on to nab them.
