Life is a school

School beat

Amara Subul
Class IX
St Joseph’s Convent High School

Lessons: Anti-tobacco and cleanliness

Help in real life

Smoking: My driver used to smoke a lot. Last year, I threw away his pack of cigarettes. Initially, he got angry. However, when I explained to him the consequences, he quit the habit.

Cleanliness: My elder sister used to paint and leave bottles and paintbrushes lying around. My brother tripped on one of the bottles once. I told her that if she kept things in such a manner, someone could also trip and break his or her bones. Now, she doesn't do it anymore.

Lessons: Energy conservation and no to polybags and crackers

Help in real life

Energy conservation: We were taught in school to conserve energy in all its forms. We launched a mission, which the school supported — all the bulbs in our school were replaced with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). When we moved to our new house, we installed a solar water heater. This saves a significant amount of energy.

No to polybags and crackers: Our school emphasises on preventing use of polybags and crackers. My friends and me made paper bags from newspapers and distributed it among shopkeepers in our locality. During Diwali, we tried not to burst crackers and encouraged others to desist from doing it.

Lessons: Observing and being truthful

Help in real life

Observing: My teacher had asked us to speak on a particular topic. We were supposed to explain what had been already taught. I could not attend the class earlier. But I observed my classmates, listened carefully and answered properly.

Being truthful: I went to watch a film skipping my mathematics test in a coaching institute. However, when I told my teacher about the film, he did not scold me.

Lessons: Be aware of situations and too many textbooks can be confusing.

Help in real life

Awareness: My friends and me were at SK Science Centre last Sunday. We were planning to sit on the see-saw. However, I noticed that a nut had come loose. Being aware saved us from getting injured.

Too many books create confusion: I was tensed before my social studies examination. Initially, I went through many books. Feeling confused, I opted for a single one and scored good.

Shubhangi
Class IX
Patna Central School

Lessons: Punctuality and parents are the best teachers

Help in real life

Punctuality: It so happened that one day I reached school earlier than my classmates. My friends arrived late and were punished. Being on time saved the day for me.

Parents are the best teachers: My parents have guided me whenever I was in trouble. I have realised their love and blessings are unconditional.
