Governor to declare VC names by Jan. 7

Patna, Jan. 3: The Raj Bhavan would send a list of names of persons, who will be appointed vice-chancellors in 10 universities of Bihar, to the state government by January 7.

According to sources, the chancellor of universities in Bihar and Governor Devanand Konwar was expected to return to Patna from New Delhi on Thursday evening.

“Once, the governor reaches Patna, he will send the state government for consultation a list of names of persons who will be appointed regular VCs,” said a source.

The appointment of VCs in the state universities became necessary after Patna High Court on December 7, 2012, set aside the appointment of six vice-chancellors and four pro-vice-chancellors appointed by Konwar, in his capacity as chancellor, in August 2011.

However, after the high court directive, the Raj Bhavan on December 10, provided interim relief to the VCs by asking them to continue in their post till further order.

The high court had also directed the Raj Bhavan to send the list of names within a month to the state for consultation. It also directed that there should be a consensus between the Raj Bhavan and the state on the names. The month-long deadline would expire on January 7.
