Kin tormentor in the net

Banka/Patna, Jan. 3: A relative of a 25-year-old woman was arrested today in Banka district for allegedly raping her in her house under the jurisdiction of Katoria police, around 280km southeast from here.

The accused, Sikander Soren (26), raped the victim late night on December 26. He was today produced before the Banka chief judicial magistrate, who remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.

The victim, a mother of two children, alleged that her husband was not present in the house when she was raped. The accused, a resident of Jamua village, took advantage of her husband’s absence and outraged her modesty.

The victim’s husband is a daily wager. He went to Delhi a fortnight ago.

Banka sub-divisional police officer Ajay Kumar said the woman was today sent to the Sadar hospital for medical examination. “But today being a holiday, the doctors were not present in the hospital. Prima facie the allegation against the accused is true. Soren was arrested within 12 hours of the incident reported to the police,” he told The Telegraph over phone from Banka. Bhagalpur inspector-general (IG) Jitendra Kumar said the investigating officer (IO) of the case had been asked to submit the chargesheet at the earliest. “I have also asked the Banka district police chief to do the needful for speedy trial of the case as the accused has been booked. At the same time, the IO has been ordered to gather as much evidence as he can,” he said. IG (weaker section), criminal investigation department, Arvind Pandey has sought a detailed report from the Banka district magistrate and the superintendent of police so that the victim could be provided compensation fast. He personally talked to the district magistrate and inquired about the Katoria rape.

Cops rescue girl

An autorickshaw driver today made a futile attempt to outrage the modesty of a 20-year-old physically challenged girl in Jehanabad district.

Sources said the girl boarded the three-wheeler for going to Bairangibad on Ghosi road, around 60km south of the state capital.

But the auto driver headed towards Kako road. Suspecting foul play, the girl raised an alarm. Hearing her cry for help, a team of the Town police station chased the autorickshaw.

Spotting the cops, the auto-driver escaped leaving behind the vehicle. The autorickshaw was later seized and brought to the Town police station.

“Efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the autorickshaw driver,” said an officer posted at Jehanabad Town police station.
