Threat complaint by family of dead

Calcutta, Jan. 3: The family of Mir Amirul Islam alias Guddu, who died on Tuesday after setting himself ablaze in front of Karaya police station to persuade cops to register a woman’s rape complaint, today lodged a complaint alleging threats by the prime accused’s accomplices.

The family said in the complaint that the associates of prime accused Sheikh Shahzada had allegedly threatened Guddu’s relatives when they were returning home after burying him.

Guddu, a private tutor, had on January 4 protested the police’s alleged reluctance to register a rape complaint and set himself ablaze. The police had initially registered a complaint of molestation but changed it to rape on January 6.

“On our way back from the Gobra burial ground around 7pm, we were accosted by Shahzada’s associates Selim, Salman and Murshed, and threatened with dire consequences. We were told that we would be killed if we did not withdraw the complaint against Shahzada,” one of Guddu’s relatives said in the complaint.

Some residents of Karaya said they were planning to take out a procession in a day or two. “We will demand exemplary punishment for Shahzada. The exact date and time of the procession is yet to be fixed,” said Sheikh Jahangir, an acquaintance of Guddu.

The family of the three-year-old girl who was allegedly raped is yet to lodge an FIR against the officers of Karaya police station who were reluctant to take a complaint of rape.

“The girl’s family had been trying to convince the police to take a rape complaint but the cops had only registered a molestation case,” a resident said.

He added that Guddu was trying to mobilise public opinion against Shahzada, who has been arrested, and the police.

“Guddu was desperate to prove that there was merit in the complaint of rape. So he set himself on fire,” the resident said.
