Boy TV tiff turns fatal

Malda, Jan. 2: A 10-year-old boy today attacked his 14-year-old friend with a sickle, killing him following an altercation while watching TV at a neighbour’s house.

Police sources said a group of boys had gone to Giyasuddin Haque’s house, a resident of Churkibhita village in Ratua block, to watch TV.

“While watching, the two boys got into a fight, probably over the choice of the channel. The 10-year-old went out of the room in a fit of rage, found a sickle nearby, returned and struck his friend, Farhad Haque, on his chest and neck,” said Jayanta Pal, the police superintendent of Malda.

Farhad collapsed on the floor and died on the spot.

The 10-year-old is absconding.

“None of us was at home today. It was a common practice among the boys to watch TV at my home. They would often come and switch on the TV,” Haque said.

His village is 55km from Malda town

“The accused has fled the spot,” said Sumanta Biswas, the officer-in-charge of Ratua police station.
