Woman, child die on tracks

A woman and a toddler were mowed down by a goods train near Adityapur station, 5km from Tatanagar junction, on Wednesday afternoon.

Though the railway police are yet to ascertain whether it was an accident or a suicide, local residents back the second possibility.

The identities of the woman — believed to be in her mid-twenties — and the three-year-old girl, who was perhaps her daughter, are yet to be established. Their dismembered bodies have been sent to MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem.

According to an eyewitness, the woman and the child were seen standing near the tracks between Adityapur and Tatanagar around 1pm.

“I was basking in the midday sun when I saw them. A goods train was coming from a distance. As it came nearer, the woman started walking on the tracks. She almost dragged the child along. And then, there was just blood everywhere,” said Jyoti Singh Sardar, who lives in the nearby Chuna Bhatta bustee.

Jyoti claimed that till the moment she did not realise what was happening. “Had I known her intention, I would have screamed and alerted people or done something to prevent her from committing suicide,” she said.

Officer in charge of Tatanagar GRP inspector Laxman Prasad, however, said they were yet to get a clear picture on the deaths. “We will be in a position to say something conclusively only after getting the post-mortem report and identifying the bodies.”

He added that they would keep the bodies at the medical college mortuary for 72 hours to allow identification.
