Protest against eve-tease

Nearly 80 general nursing and midwifery students of Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the health hub’s main gate at Seraidhela to demand police protection.

The protests, which were sparked off by the eve-teasing and attempted molestation of two girls late on Tuesday night, saw the agitators raising slogans against the police and hospital administrations for failing to provide them proper security.

The protesters gathered at the spot around noon on Wednesday and stayed put till senior PMCH officials, including principal of the nursing course Manisha Talukdar, rushed to the spot 30 minutes later and held talks with the students.

The protests were called off after the officials pacified the students and promised to forward a copy of the demands to PMCH superintendent Arun Kumar.

A team of senior police officers, including deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Amit Kumar, also visited the hospital later and promised to beef up night-time patrolling in the area by a Tiger Mobile.

Speaking to reporters later, one of the protesting students said four inebriated youths tried to molest two girls when they were returning back to the general nursing and midwifery hostel around 10pm on Tuesday. The hostel is situated around 70m outside the main hospital complex.

“The youths chased us till the hostel gate. We somehow managed to give them a slip and went and complained to the hostel warden and principal. The police, who reached the spot later, refused to co-operate with us and didn’t even register a written complaint,” the student alleged.

Principal Talukdar, however, echoed the concerns of the students on Wednesday said several incidents of eve teasing had occurred in the area in the past few days.

“The administration should provide us with a guard who can keep an eye out near the camp,” she said.
