Two killed in accidents

Two pedestrians died in two accidents in the city since early on Wednesday. A little after Tuesday midnight, an unidentified vehicle knocked down two men near Mayer Ghat on Rabindra Sarani. They were taken to RG Kar hospital with severe head injuries, where one of them died. The other is in critical condition. Around 10.30am, a bus of route 219 knocked down Anjali Dey, 67, on Belgachhia Road. She was admitted to RG Kar hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Mystery death

The body of 28-year-old Amit Ghosh was found below Belghoria Expressway early on Wednesday. An officer of Baranagar police station said Ghosh, a plumber who used to live in Nawdapara, had gone to his friendís house on Tobin Road two days ago to celebrate the new year but left the same evening after a quarrel. The police have started a preliminary investigation into the death though no murder case has been lodged yet.

Hooch clash

Ten people were injured on Harachand Mukherjee Lane in Howrah on Wednesday morning in a clash over the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor in the area. The injured were taken to Howrah District Hospital, where two have been admitted. No one has been arrested yet.

Accident

One person died and two were injured in Baruipur on Wednesday morning after a lorry hit the motorbike they were riding. Imtihan Mollah, Guddu Mollah and Imran Mollah, all in their mid-20s, were returning home when the accident occurred. Imtihan was taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Guddu and Imran were later taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. The lorry was seized but the driver managed to flee.

Fire

Soumitra De, 28, was admitted to Howrah District Hospital with 35 per cent burns after he and a relative allegedly set fire to their house in Shibpur. Police said De and the other person were intellectually impaired. Three tenders brought the fire under control.
