A 60-year-old stock trader tried to commit suicide at his Haridevpur home after strangulating his wife to death on Tuesday night.
The couple’s daughter Shoma returned from work around 7.30 in the evening and found mother Sikha, 48, lying unconscious in one bedroom and father Khagendra trying to hang himself from the ceiling fan in another bedroom.
The couple were taken to hospital, where Sikha was declared dead on arrival.
The police later learnt Khagendra, a resident of 440 Daspara Road in Haridevpur, had tried to hang himself thrice but failed.
Khagendra has been arrested on the charge of murdering his wife. The police said they had found a note in his pocket that read: “After killing my wife I committed suicide.”
Sources said Khagendra faced frequent taunts from his wife for having to depend on his children for a living.
“The couple often fought over Khagendra’s unstable financial condition,” said an officer of Haridevpur police station.
The couple’s elder son Jyotirmoy, 28, works as an accountant in a medicine shop, while Shoma works in a private firm. Younger son Chinmoy was out of town.
