Two brick kiln labourers suspected to have raped a woman in Barasat have been missing since three days, police found out on Tuesday.
A CID team visited the brick kiln, where the 45-year-old woman worked, on Tuesday and asked the manager to produce the two labourers for interrogation. The duo, however, were nowhere to be found.
“We came to know they have been missing for the past three days. They haven’t even gone home for two days. This has strengthened our suspicion. Both are on the list of prime suspects,” said a CID officer. “Other labourers at the kiln confirmed they had not seen the duo since the night of the incident.”
The victim’s son had lodged a complaint with Barasat police station on the night of December 29 after he allegedly found his mother’s mud-caked and naked body on the bank of a pond at the kiln.
The woman’s husband was also attacked with acid after he tried to save his wife from sexual assault. He was taken to Barasat hospital and later shifted to RG Kar hospital.
The condition of the man improved on Tuesday, but he continues to be in the intensive therapy unit. “He is under observation and we expect to shift him to the general ward soon,” said a hospital official. “However, the internal injuries are yet to be examined as the wounds are still raw.”
Four people were arrested from various parts of the city on Monday and Tuesday in three cases of molestation. Murli Paswan, 19, was arrested near New Market after a woman in her mid-30s accused him of molesting her in a crowd. Two Nepalese youths were arrested from Bowbazar after a woman alleged they had molested her. Swapan Roy, 40, was arrested in Mahestala on Tuesday for allegedly molesting a 35-year old homemaker.
A six-month-old girl was found lying near a vat in Baruipur’s Pal Para on Tuesday morning. She was taken to hospital, where she was declared dead. Doctors said the baby had died because of the cold. Police have initiated a search for the girl’s parents.
