Medical college, NH-33 link on cards

Call it New Year gifts for steel city residents.

Construction of a state-of-the-art, Rs 100-crore medical college, which will come up near Ardeshir Dalal Memorial (ADM) Hospital in Baridih, will begin in 2013. Work on the ambitious Rs 1,323-crore eastern corridor, linking NH-33 with Tatanagar station, will also commence in the first quarter of the new year.

According to sources, the proposal for the medical college, a collaborative venture between Tata Steel and Manipal Hospitals Group, is in the final phase of clearance by Medical Council of India (MCI) and also the state government.

Tata Steel vice-president Sanjiv Paul confirmed the development on the sidelines of the inauguration of a new mobile medical unit at ADM Hospital, run by a Tata Steel trust. “We have plans to improve healthcare facility and this move is a step towards that direction. I will be able to give details after everything is finalised,” said Paul.

A formal MoU will be signed between Tata Steel and Manipal Hospitals Group after a go-ahead from MCI and Jharkhand government. “Tata Steel will provide nearly 20 acres near ADM Hospital to Manipal Hospitals Group for setting up the college, which will initially offer 150 seats. The steel major will spend nearly Rs 100 crore. In return, Manipal Hospitals Group will run and manage ADM Hospital and also the proposed college,” said the source.

Paul also said the eastern corridor project, a joint venture between Tata Steel and the state, is expected to start in March next year. “The government has completed all legal formalities and we are waiting for a nod from the cabinet for work to commence. The corridor will help in easing traffic congestion in the city as apart from flyovers and arterial roads, we will also develop specific parking facilities on the lines of existing Transport Nagar (in Mango),” said Sanjiv Paul. Once construction starts, the project will take two years to complete.
