Artists protest Delhi rape

Anger, anguish, shame and concern — artists from Ranchi raised their voices in protest against the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old student in Delhi by painting on a 30-foot long flex near Morabadi grounds on Monday.

The artists, nearly 12 in number all of who belonged to the Chotanagpur Art Research and Development Society, assembled near Gandhi statue and painted their imagination on the canvas

Though the artists claimed that the rape of the medical student on a moving bus had acted as a trigger, they said their protest was in general against the atrocities that women in the country has been facing over the years.

Though not of great aesthetic value, the work of the artists — created over a mere two-and-a-half-hour period — aptly expressed the deep shock and anguish of the nation.

“Such incidents are reported from everywhere, including from our own state. It is time the residents made their voice heard,” said Meena Singh, a teacher who had dropped by to see the artists at work.

From outright rage to concern, the works depicted many moods of the artists. While Swapna Das painted a woman on fire — perhaps drawing references from the Sati system — Vinod Ranjan and Manoj Sinha depicted women figures surrounded by innumerous cruel, blood-soaked hands. Haren Thakur and Vishwanath Chakraborty used the canvas to depict the lustful looks that women have to guard themselves against whenever they step out of their houses.

However, Dinesh Singh appeared to be the most enraged of the lot, creating the figure of a woman with a man’s head in her hand.
