Spain and Australia victorious

Perth: Australia beat Germany 2-0 in the Hopman Cup on Saturday after Andrea Petkovic had to retire from her singles match with a right knee injury against Ashleigh Barty. Bernard Tomic beat Tommy Haas 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-5. In another match, Spain clinched a 2-1 victory over South Africa after winning the mixed doubles 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-8.

Negi loses

New Delhi: Parimarjan Negi lost to Anton Korobov of Ukraine while K. Sasikiran and Abhijeet Gupta signed peace with Poland’s Radoslav Wojtaszek and Evgeny Alekseev of Russia in the penultimate round of AICF-AAI Chess Cup, here on Saturday.

Guron wins

New Delhi: PPS Guron of Chattisgarh shot 120+25 to win the men’s skeet gold medal in the Shooting National Championship here on Saturday. In the women's air pistol event, Heena Sidhu was leading the with 383, followed by Annuraj Singh and Shreya Gawande of Maharashtra, who was placed third with 381.

Barcelona: Barcelona president Sandro Rosell says coach Tito Vilanova, who suffered a recurrence of cancer in his saliva glands earlier this month, will be back at work midway through January.

‘Zlatanera’

Stockholm: Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already written his name large in his country’s sporting history books and now he is in the Swedish dictionary as well. The Swedish Language Council has included the verb “zlatanera” — meaning “to dominate” — in its list of new words from 2012, it said on its website.
