Parthiv’s 100 saves Gujarat

Mumbai: Captain Parthiv Patel (101) scored a fighting century to help Gujarat score a modest 244 against Mumbai in their final Ranji Trophy Group A match here on Saturday.

The diminutive Patel kept the one end tight but did not get support from his batting colleagues after being invited to bat at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy ground. India’s struggling paceman Zaheer Khan also had a decent day as he bowled 17 overs and took two wickets for 40 runs.

Left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan (3/54) was the most successful bowler for Gujarat with three wickets while Javed Khan (2/46) took two.

In Pune, captain Stuart Binny and wicketkeeper Muralidharen Gautam struck unbeaten centuries as Karnataka recovered from a poor start to end the first day on Saturday.

Binny and Gautam were still going strong on 115 and 132 and they have so far shared 215 runs for the unfinished fifth wicket stand. (AGencies)
