Temple theft

Krishnagar, Dec. 28: Gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 6 lakh were stolen early today from a 600-year-old temple in Nadia.

The theft was noticed by a priest at 5.45am, when he came to open the gates of the Nrishingha temple. “The thieves removed the grilles of the temple window and entered the room where the idol is kept. The silver crown and other ornaments were stolen,” priest Ranjit Banerjee said.

District police chief S.R. Mishra said: “I expect to arrest the culprits soon.”
