Nitish misses Didi twice in two weeks

Calcutta, Dec. 28: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar touched down in Calcutta for the second time in a fortnight but the unscheduled trip meant that, like last time, a meeting with Mamata Banerjee couldn’t take place.

Nitish landed around 7.30pm as his flight from Delhi to Patna was diverted to Calcutta because of fog. With sources in the Bihar chief minister’s office initially suggesting he could stay back for the night, it triggered speculation that Nitish could meet Mamata, who is in north Bengal, tomorrow morning.

But Nitish left for Patna tonight by train. “The Bihar chief minister took the Duronto Express at 10.05pm,” a rail official said.

It couldn’t be confirmed if Nitish’s aides had checked with Mamata’s office for a possible meeting. “Even if they tried, it wouldn’t have been possible. Our chief minister will return only around 3pm tomorrow,” said a Bengal official.

Nitish’s last visit to Calcutta was on December 14 when he came to take part in an entrepreneurs’ meet. He was slated to call on Mamata at Writers’ but the meeting couldn’t fructify as Nitish reached the city late in the afternoon, instead of the first half. The reason again was fog, which hit flights from Patna.

“There was the possibility of a chance meeting at the event. But by the time Nitish came, Mamata had left,” said a Writers’ source.
