Notice to cops on suicide

Chandigarh, Dec. 28: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the rape and suicide of a teenager, who killed herself on Wednesday after police failed to act against the alleged rapists even a month after the assault and instead allegedly told her to strike a compromise or “live in fear”.

In her suicide note, the teen had blamed the police along with the accused for “destroying her life”.

The court has sent a notice to the police, who stirred yesterday after the girl had died.

“We have arrested the accused and dismissed from service the station house officer Gurcharan Singh and investigating officer Nasib Singh,” state director general of police Sumedh Singh Saini said here today. DSP Harpreet Singh has been suspended.

The girl, a resident of a Patiala village, was assaulted by two men from her own village on November 13.

“It took the police 14 days to lodge her complaint. She was called at all odd hours by the police and asked uncomfortable questions…. the accused and the police had started casting aspersions on her character,” a relative said over the phone.
