Water sharing

New Delhi, Dec. 28 (PTI): Bengal today insisted that the opinion of states should be mandatory for sharing of water with any country, an apparent reference to the Teesta water-sharing issue with Bangladesh.

“National interest cannot be kept paramount by sacrificing the interest of a particular state, notably West Bengal,” state irrigation and waterways minister Rajib Banerjee told a meeting of the National Water Resources Council.

A deal on sharing Teesta waters with Bangladesh had to be scrapped during the Prime Minister’s visit to Dhaka in September 2011 following reservations voiced by Mamata.
