Fashion 2012

With barbed wire and recycled metal decor, Abhishek Dutta opened a store at 10A Shakespeare Sarani (on the ground floor of Shagun Wedding Mall). Spread over 1,000sq ft, installations — horses made of bike scrap and a wire mesh bird perched on one of the pret racks — dot the store. Adding to the feel are shoe dices for legs of chairs and refrigerator compressors as wall decor. In keeping with the party season, a fall-winter line occupies the shelves.

After nine years in Forum, Ritu Kumar launched her two-level flagship store at 4 Woodburn Court Road. The dominant design feature is the Calico wallpaper — a signature RK print. The ground floor houses the younger, cooler Label and the first level has the more ‘serious’ styles.

Ekru opened its flagship store at 40/1 Roopchand Mukherjee Lane (near the Bhowanipore police station). The store is spread across three storeys and houses their casual, formal and bridal wear collections. Retailing apart, Ekru hosted Fashion on a Platter, an exhibition-cum-talk in association with t2.

Bangladeshi designer Bibi Russell opened her first Indian store. Drop in at Café Thé at ICCR for her trademark gamchhas and rickshaw art.

Armed with a degree in styling from Spain and years of work experience in Dubai and with Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Priyanka Khanna launched her label in May. From bespoke tailoring to wardrobe consulting, her ensembles are classic with an edgy twist. She retails from 138/D Karaya Road.

JULY opened its second store at 19 Alipore Road. The 450sq ft store stocks tunics, cocktail saris and quirky accessories.

Nayna by Neha Patney Jain at 3B Short Street is a one-stop shop for all things stylish — from jumpsuits to dried flowers!

The month-long CIMA Art in Life 2012 held over September-October saw shoppers throng the Sunny Towers gallery. From statement pieces and knick-knacks to a handpicked sari collection — there was something for everyone. Rituparno Ghosh, Manish Malhotra, Moon Moon Sen , Anamika Khanna, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Madhu Neotia, Rituparna Sengupta, Swastika Mukherjee, Raj Mahtani, Kallol Datta, Priti Patel... the list of admirers grew by the day! It also saw Tolly actress Arpita deck up as a bride with jewellery especially crafted for Art in Life by Anjali Jewellers.

You might think Sabyasachi Mukherjee was MIA in town but that’s because Calcutta’s star designer was busy globe-trotting. A spectacular show in London’s iconic Sotheby’s this summer, launch of a flagship store in Hyderabad, putting together the decadent Cinema Suites at 51 Buckingham Gate, Taj Suites & Residences, dressing Sridevi for English Vinglish... it’s been one joy ride. And somewhere in between, if Oprah Winfrey (picture left) turns into your biggest fan, well, what do you say about a year like that?!

Stylefile 2012, in association with t2, was back at The Old Bungalow on November 20. The daylong shopping fiesta featured Pakistani designer Nida Azwer, a first time at Stylefile. Shoppers flocked to the Alipore address to check out the latest from Rohit Bal, Raghavendra Rathore, Anamika Khanna....
