Scholarship gateway to study in Europe

- European Union offers Erasmus Mundus programme for AN College students

For students of AN College, 2013 can be life changing.

The college — a constituent institution of Magadh University and one of the few colleges in Bihar that has the A-grade NAAC accreditation — has been selected as the only partner institution in Bihar for European Union (EU)’s much-acclaimed scholarship programme Erasmus Mundus.

The programme aims to enhance the quality of higher education and promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through mobility and academic co-operation. The project is for a period of four years starting 2013.

Under the Erasmus Mundus India4U programme, students would get an opportunity to study in the top universities under the European Union in courses such as agricultural sciences, architecture urban and regional planning, business studies and management sciences, education, teacher training, engineering technology, geography, geology, law, natural sciences and social sciences.

Ashok Ghosh, the co-ordinator of the programme at AN College, said: “The scholarship offers an opportunity for students to study in the top universities of Europe. The universities would bear the study and conveyance cost of the selected student.”

He added that the programme also provides scholarships to researchers at one of the European partner universities.

“In the first Erasmus Mundus EURIndia programme between 2009 and 2013, there were only 70 applications from Bihar, while from Maharashtra there were 500 applications. Karnataka had sent 600 applications and Tamil Nadu more than 350,” the co-ordinator said, adding that there is a lack of awareness among students in Bihar about such programmes.

“Not many universities in Bihar have collaborations with top foreign universities for research programmes. So, students studying in the Bihar universities have little information about such programmes,” Ghosh said, emphasising the need for awareness among students.

Students and scholars can be chosen from a wide variety of academic fields at different levels of study like undergraduate, masters, doctorate, post-doctorate and staff, for the programme. The application process for the Erasmus Mundus India4U-II scholarship started on November 30 and the last date for applying is February 18.
