Hope to do an encore: Kumar

Ahmedabad: Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made a dream debut. In the first T20 against Pakistan, he returned with figures of 4-0-9-3.

Now, he wants to continue the good work in the next match. “It was essential for me to deliver as I was opening the bowling. I am happy that I could do that. I want to continue in the same vein tomorrow. Hope to do an encore,” Bhuvneshwar told a media conference on Thursday.

When most of the Indian pacers are struggling with their form, Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes as a whiff of fresh air. The significant part in Bhuvneshwar’s bowling is that he can swing the ball both ways.

Asked what is the reason behind his success, he said: “I stuck to my basics. I only concentrated on executing the plans. I think it came off well.”

Asked whether he was feeling any pressure, since he was making his debut against Pakistan, he replied: “Any Indian cricketer playing against Pakistan is excited. Like any other debutant, I was a bit nervous but I was not overwhelmed by the occasion. When I went into the ground, I didn’t feel any pressure. The seniors told me to play it as a normal match and I did the same.”

India are 0-1 down and face a must-win scenario. Will it create pressure on him?

“There is no pressure on us. We play to win. In the last match, unfortunately we lost. But we will try our best to win this one,” he said.

The wicket at Motera looks to be dead compared to the one at Bangalore, where it aided seamers. Bhuvneshwar said he needs to adapt to the conditions to achieve success.

“The conditions here are different. The one in Bangalore was seaming and over here, it will be slow and the pitch will offer turn. The attempt will be to execute the plan and give our best shot.”

Bhuvneshwar said he is disappointed that Sachin Tendulkar has retired from ODIs. “Yes, that’s a big disappointment. But then I thought that I still have a chance to play with him in Tests. I hope that happens,” he said.
