Student body found

Malda, Dec. 27: The body of a 22-year-old college student from Bihar was found with strangulation marks on its throat in a village near Manikchak this morning.

Police suspect the youth was killed for having a relationship with a woman in the locality.

Tetru Mondal, a resident of Bandhpara, 40km from here, was a first-year history honours student of Bhagalpur College in Bihar. He had come to visit his house during vacations.

“Around 8 last night, he got a call in his cellphone and left the house. He did not return all night. We were planning to inform the police. But around 7am today, we were informed that his body was spotted in a mustard field nearby,” Tetru’s mother Sandhya said.

A muffler was wrapped around the youth’s neck and his face was stuffed with cloth.

Police sources said Tetru’s muffler was used to strangle him. “After the youth left his home, four-five persons took him away. They stuffed cloth into his mouth so that his shouts could not be heard,” an officer said.

Tetru’s father Haren Mondal filed a police complaint, naming the lady with whom Tetru was allegedly having an affair, her husband and four-five of the student’s friends.

Police sources said the lady had been detained but the others were absconding.

“For the past three years, Tetru had an illicit relationship with the lady. Her husband was also aware of the affair and had warned her several times,” a police officer said.

He added that the lady’s husband was a daily labourer and stayed elsewhere. The couple have two sons. “During interrogation, the lady told us that she had an affair with Tetru. We are finding out more details about the incident.”

District police chief Jayanta Pal said a murder case had started. “We have detained one person and are hoping for a major breakthrough soon.”
