Dengue menace: The township saw an alarming spread of dengue. A total of 299 were affected, by the health department’s count. Two dengue detection camps or fever centres were set up, one each in Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital and in Matri Sadan. Around 208 nurses were deployed to visit every house to collect data on dengue. Bidhannagar Municipality formed task forces which also went door-to-door to check for containers filled with water.

Soccer’s black day: The I-League derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal at Salt Lake stadium on December 9 was abandoned due to spectator violence. A red card brought missiles and bottles raining from the Bagan gallery, fracturing Bagan player Syed Rahim Nabi’s cheekbone and triggering a police batoncharge. Later, Mohun Bagan refused to take the field again citing safety concerns.
Daylight dacoity: A gang of six, including a woman, broke into AD 125 one April morning and assaulted resident Surender Singh Dabla with rods and a chopper, and held his three children at gunpoint. The thugs ransacked the single-storeyed house and left with cash and valuables worth Rs 3.5 lakh.
Manna dead: Legendary footballer Sailen Manna (Picture right) passed away in February at the age of 87. A recipient of the Mohun Bagan Ratna, he led India to a gold medal in the 1951 Asian Games. Manna stayed in FD Block.
