Suicide after rape ‘inaction’

Patiala, Dec. 27 (PTI): An 18-year-old committed suicide after police failed to act on her gang-rape complaint filed over a month-and-a-half ago.

The three accused were arrested today, hours after the teenager consumed a poisonous substance at her home in a Patiala village and died in hospital last night.

Two Punjab cops have been sacked and a DSP suspended. A probe has been ordered into the alleged inaction.

The victim had reported the matter to the local police station but officer-in-charge, Gurcharan Singh, registered the FIR only after 14 days. Police sources said the girl was raped on the night of Diwali (November 13) by Balwinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh with the connivance of a woman accomplice, Shinderpal Kaur.

The sources added that officer Gurcharan used to ask the victim embarrassing questions every time she used to visit the police station to enquire about the follow-up action on her complaint.

Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal ordered “strictest possible action” against the three cops.
