Woman lynched in city

Calcutta, Dec. 27: A woman in Tiljala was beaten to death tonight allegedly by a mob that accused her of being involved in a baby-stealing racket.

The woman, in her forties, was allegedly caught picking up a baby lying in front of a shanty.

A local youth claimed he heard the woman, identified as a rag-picker by police, muttering to herself while lifting the baby: “I have got this one today. I have lifted many before and today it’s the turn of this kid.”

He alerted his neighbours, who allegedly beat up the woman. She was delared dead on arrival at Chittaranjan National Medical College Hospital.
