Scribe killing condemned

Shillong, Dec. 26: The All Meghalaya Journalists’ Union today condemned the killing of Manipur journalist Thangjam Dwijamani (Nanao) Singh in police firing on December 23 in Manipur.

Union president Philip Marwein said the union has asked the Manipur government to adequately compensate Singh’s relatives and sought punishment for the policemen involved in the crime.

“Killing of the journalist is highly condemnable as he was performing his duty. This act of violence is an infringement on the rights of media professionals to work freely and fairly under any circumstances,” Marwein said.

The union also conveyed its condolences to Singh’s family.

Infiltrators held

BSF troops of Gumaghat border outpost in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya apprehended two Bangladeshis, Md Amir Hussain and Anwar Mian, while they were trying to infiltrate into India yesterday. One mobile phone with a Bangladeshi SIM card were seized from them.

Ganja seized

BSF troops deployed in South West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya seized 9kg of ganja worth approximately Rs 45,000 while it was being smuggled into Bangladesh on Monday, a statement issued by the BSF today said. Apprehended persons and seized items have been handed over to department for further disposal and legal action according to the law of the land.
