Labourer found dead in ditch, four held

Imphal, Dec. 26: Four village defence volunteers were arrested today for beating a construction labourer to death inside the campus of Central Agriculture University in Imphal West last night.

Police said the incident happened while the volunteers were on duty on the university campus at Iroisemba in Imphal West, 6km from Imphal.

The labourers were staying inside the campus for some construction-related work. The volunteers have instructions not to allow anyone out of the campus after 7pm to prevent trouble.

Some drunk labourers came out of their room and wanted to go outside after 7pm. The volunteers on duty told them they could not go out. So, an argument broke out and the volunteers beat up the labourers.

The labourers fled but one of them was found in a ditch after a search was launched when he failed to come back at his room.

He was taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal immediately where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“We have arrested four volunteers and they are being interrogated. The labourers came out from their room after drinks and the incident was the fallout of their attempt to go out of the campus,” a police official said.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Kharibam Sunil from Charangpat in Thoubal district. Residents of Charangpat blocked the Imphal-Thoubal road after getting news of Sunil’s death. The police dispersed the protesters.
