Ranchi, Dec. 26: A gangster was killed by a mob last evening when he had gone to collect levy at Renghari Mundatoli in Thetaitanger police station area of Simdega, 20km from the district headquarters, less than a week after five persons with criminal background were lynched in Khunti.
According to Simdega SP Prabhat Kumar, Ajit Sahu had been demanding levy from Dinesh Tirkey, a retired army man. Sahu went to the village at 4pm to demand Rs 50,000 from Tirkey. He was soon gheraoed by villagers and killed.
“Sahu was earlier associated with Pahari Cheeta and perhaps he also happened to be the local area commander of PLFI. Several criminal cases, too, were pending against him,” Kumar added.
The Pahari Cheeta, a Naxalite organisation, is active in remote villages of Simdega and Gumla districts.
“The outfit lacks any ideology. Most of its cadres have criminal background who thrive on extortion. Two cases of murder and robbery and two more cases under the Arms Act are pending against it. Sahu was sent to jail in all four cases,” said Thetaitanger OC Arvind Kumar. He said Tirkey had lodged an FIR, but the victim’s relatives had not yet approached the police.
