A woman who has accused a former confidential assistant to transport minister Madan Mitra of rape recorded her statement before an Alipore magistrate on Wednesday.
The woman in her early 30s lodged a complaint with Garfa police station a week ago, accusing Reazaul Karim of rape and fraud. Karim is on the run.
According to the complaint, the woman met Karim in 2010 and the two got married in a temple on August 20 that year. “He had pretended to be single. We started living in an apartment in Kasba,” she said in her complaint.
The woman, who owns a travel agency, also alleged that Karim had duped her of more than Rs 50 lakh. “I gave him money on several occasions for starting business. I even gave him a key post in my company,” she said in her complaint. “He started torturing me after I refused to pay him any more.”
The woman also accused Karim of trying to kill her by giving her a glass of milk laced with sedatives last month. “I had to be admitted to a nursing home. After I was released, I found out that Karim had been married before and that he spent the money I gave him on her family.”
Police have started an investigation. “We have collected photographs of the complainant’s marriage with the accused and his bank account details,” said an officer of Garfa police station.
Karim was removed from the post of Mitra’s assistant in February.
