Teens killed in bike crash

A boy and a girl in their teens were killed after the boy — who did not have a driving licence — lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and rammed into a lamp post on Andul Road in Howrah on Wednesday.

According to police, Shahrukh Ali Molla, 19, was riding without a helmet and at high speed. He tried to dodge past a truck in the narrow Danesh Sheikh Lane and crashed into a lamp post.

Molla, a Class XII student at Kibriya Gazi High School at Uttarpara in Ankurhati, Howrah, broke his skull and died on the spot.

His friend and classmate Rubina Khatun, who was riding pillion, also without a helmet, was pronounced dead within minutes of being admitted to Howrah State General Hospital.

“The youth lost control of the bike while overtaking the truck and rammed into the lamp post. Both he and his friend died of severe head injuries,” said a senior officer of Domjur police station.

The officer added that the boy was riding his elder brother’s motorbike. The girl used to stay near the boy’s house at Ankurhati.

“My brother borrowed my bike saying that he would return in an hour and left home around noon. Had I known what he would do, I would have never given him the key,” said Sheikh Faizal, the boy’s elder brother.

According to the police, Shahrukh left home, picked up Rubina and possibly went for a joy ride to the botanical garden, around 10km from his house. They met with the accident around 4pm, on their way back home.
