Union gheraos principal

Burdwan, Dec. 26: Trinamul Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leaders and activists today allegedly gheraoed the principal of Burdwan’s Galsi College for over two hours and assaulted two employees.

Clerk Ramkrishna Basu, who suffered head injuries after being allegedly hit with a rod, said he had been targeted last week too as “I support a party opposed to Trinamul”. Basu has been admitted to the Pursa rural health centre.

Edol Hasan, the general secretary of the college union, denied having assaulted Basu and Santanu Lohar, another clerk. Hasan accused the two of “helping the SFI get fake identity cards to enter the college on January 8 and rig the students’ union elections”.

“Principal Kumaresh Chatterjee refused to meet us when we went to lodge a written complaint today. Basu and Lohar tried to stop us from entering the principal’s chamber. So we gheraoed the principal for about two hours,” Hasan said.

The gherao was withdrawn after Chatterjee assured the students’ union that he would convene a meeting of the governing body within 10 days and discuss the demand to suspend Basu and Lohar.

Hasan said: “It is true that we jostled with the duo but we did not assault them.”

Basu lodged a police complaint against Hasan and some other “outsiders”. Principal Chatterjee could not be contacted.

SFI supporters requested the Galsi police this evening that they be given proper security. They said they would not be able to field candidates because of “Trinamul terror”.
