Boy rescued

Golaghat, Dec. 25: Police rescued a seven-year-old boy from the house of Jahanara Begum of the 11th Battalion of Assam police at Dergaon on Tuesday. The boy, who was working in her house, was allegedly being severely tortured.

Suicide

Jorhat: Ranu Dutta, a former teacher of Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, hung herself at her Club Road residence on Tuesday.

Surrender

Tinsukia: Four Ulfa militants, led by self-styled sergeant major Indrajit Neog, surrendered before Tinsukia police on Tuesday.

Arrested

Jorhat: Activists of AASU, AJYCP and some residents of Titabar were arrested on Tuesday for blocking the Amritsar Express at Titabar rail station demanding the halt of the Janshatabdi Express and Kamrup Express there.

One killed

Jorhat: A youth, Nobin Bora, died on the spot and his friend Raktim Dutta was injured when the motorcycle they were riding hit a Nano car at Hatigarh on NH 37 here late on Tuesday night.

New trains

Silchar, Dec. 25: Two passenger trains were flagged off in the Barak Valley districts today. One train will leave Silchar station at 6.15am for Karimganj and return at 8.30pm. The other train will travel between Silchar and Bhairabi in Mizoram.

Accident

Silchar: Bejoy Deb was killed when a truck collided head-on with a bike on Club Road here on Monday.

Convicted

Guwahati: The special CBI court on Monday convicted Pranab Paul Choudhury, a former head cashier of United Bank of India’s Arunachal branch in Assam’s Cachar district and sentenced him to four years’ rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 1.25 lakh. The accused was allegedly involved in misappropriation of around Rs 59,84,000 in 2003.
