Royal shares

New Delhi, Dec. 25 (PTI): Delhi High Court has allowed transfer of maharani of Jaipur Gayatri Devi’s shares in royal family’s firms to her grandchildren Devraj and Lalitya Kumari.

Gayatri Devi died on July 29, 2009, leaving a will that said Devraj and Lalitya would inherit all her properties, including the shares in the firms. But other heirs of her late husband maharaja Sawai Man Singh opposed the transfer of shares to the grandchildren.

J&K skiing

Srinagar (PTI): Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering will conduct six skiing courses of two weeks each till mid March next year in Kashmir’s ski resort at Gulmarg. It has also sponsored youths free of cost through the army and other agencies.

Accident case

New Delhi (PTI): A businessman, who was injured after being hit by a rashly-driven car, has agreed before a Delhi motor accident claims tribunal to settle the matter with the accused if she donates 400 blankets to the poor. Devender Gupta was hit by the car near Saket while he was riding his motorbike in January this year.

Husband jail

New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court has sentenced a man to five years for trying to kill his wife before their teenaged daughter, terming it as a “ghastly” act. Mukesh’s daughter testified against him during the trial.

Drug arrest

New Delhi (PTI): A Zambian woman was arrested for allegedly smuggling narcotics worth Rs 2.8 crore at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday. The woman identified as Chibuye Emmlychilonga, 32, was travelling to Adis Ababa on an Ethiopian airlines flight, officials said. She was on a tourist visa to India.

Gang rape

Sagar (PTI): A woman has been allegedly gang-raped by three sweepers at a Madhya Pradesh district hospital where she had gone for treatment of her baby. They followed her when she went to the toilet and raped her after threatening to take her life, police said. The trio have been arrested.

Cracker unit fire

Salem, Dec. 25 (PTI): Seven persons were killed and six others injured in a fire at a fireworks unit godown in Tamil Nadu’s Salem today, police said.

Five persons, including the owner of the unit, died on the spot while two others succumbed to burns at a hospital, district superintendent of police Aswin Kotnis said. Six persons, who suffered serious injuries, were undergoing treatment at different hospitals, he added.

Cricket row

Ballia (PTI): A teenager was shot at and critically injured by another player over a dispute during a cricket match in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia, police said. Happy Singh, 16, allegedly shot at Dharm Prakash Yadav with a country-made fire-arm, the police said. Happy is absconding.

Dad kills son

Bhopal (PTI): A 70-year-old businessman has been arrested on the charges of giving a “supari” for the murder of his 30-year-old son, police said on Tuesday. They said that the father had taken this step as he was fed up with his son’s threats and abuses.

Murder bid

Mumbai (PTI): The Bombay High Court has upheld the conviction of a 35-year-old businessman for stabbing a girl saying that the five-years’ rigorous imprisonment imposed on him was not “too harsh” as pleaded by him. He had stabbed the girl after

she refused his proposal for marriage.

Harassment

Bareilly (PTI): Four jeep-borne youths, including a former student leader, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly harassing and attempting to kidnap four girls in the Baradari area, police said. Mohd Arif informed the police that his two daughters along with his two nieces were returning from school, when the youths stopped to harass them on the road.

Fog hits flights

New Delhi, Dec 25 (PTI): Dense fog disrupted operations at Delhi airport for the third straight day today, leading to delays in over 100 flights, diversion of seven and cancellation of 10 others.

The flights were delayed from half an hour to five hours and some of them had to be cancelled, causing inconvenience to the passengers, airport officials said. Met officials have said the situation could get worse tomorrow.

Akali leader

Ludhiana (PTI): A senior Punjab police officer was allegedly beaten up by a leader of the ruling Akali Dal’s youth wing in a hotel brawl. S.S. Mand was injured when he intervened after the hotel owner, also a vice-president of the wing, attacked the cop’s friend, police said.

Tinted glass

Hyderabad (PTI): Police will launch the second phase of a crackdown on vehicles using dark film on windows and windshield by imposing hefty fines. A recent survey indicated that 95-97 per cent of Hyderbad’s four-lakh car-users have removed the films, while the remaining 3 to 5 per cent were wilful violators, the police said.

‘Honour’ kill

Kaushambi (PTI): A 17-year-old girl in a relationship with a youth of her village was hacked to death on Monday by her father in what police suspect was a case of honour killing.

‘Molest’ cop

Mumbai (PTI): A constable was booked on Tuesday for allegedly molesting the daughter of another policeman. A case was registered against Madhukar Rane on a complaint lodged by the 32-year-old victim, police said. The woman is the daughter of an assistant sub-inspector.

Murder probe

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): A special team has been formed to probe the murder of a diamond merchant during a robbery bid on Monday. Harihara Verma, 55, was also the member of a royal family from Puthoorkonam.Police have seized the car used in the robbery and suspect that the gang might have escaped to Tamil Nadu.
