An Indo-French film festival

iLead Calcutta, in association with Alliance Francaise, has organised a unique Indo-French festival with films from both the countries being screened on campus over the weekends between December 15 and 30. Apart from the screenings, the festival also has eminent panellists and celebrity guests engaging in post-screening discussions.

Opening with the theme Nostalgia, the first day screened Satyajit Ray’s Aparajito and Jean Renoir’s The River. The other themes of the festival are Triumph, Free Spirits, New Dawn, Femme Fatale and Law Outlaw. The Indian films at the festival include Bhooter Bhobishyot, Kahaani and 22shey Srabon.

“The French film industry is the third biggest in the world. They have consistently produced great films and hence French cinema was the choice,” said Soumya Roy Choudhury, who conceptualised the festival.

The festival is not only restricted to films as it also attempts to understand French culture via other art forms like music. A jam session between Ensemble Maurice from France and the baul group of Shyamal Gayen was one of the highlights.

Tollywood actor Parambrata Chattopadhyay, who was on campus on December 22, interacted with the students of iLead following the screening of Bhooter Bhobishyot. “We need many such festivals to engage in cultural exchange with other countries. The canon of world cinema being showcased here is really inspiring,” said Parambrata, a self-confessed lover of European and French cinema.
