Rape cry on Xmas Eve, accused on the run

A 51-year-old woman was allegedly raped at Bakultala bus stand in Thakurpukur late on Monday when the entire city was under special vigil for Christmas Eve.

“We have started a probe and the youth will soon be arrested. The complainant has undergone medical tests and been sent to a home on Eliot Road,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint police commissioner, crime.

The cops have learnt that the woman, who used to sleep on the pavement, was dragged by a youth in his late 30s behind a JNNURM bus parked at the deserted stand.

A passerby who heard the woman’s cries raised an alarm around 11.15pm, prompting local residents to rush in. They caught the youth and alerted police but by the time a team from Thakurpukur police station turned up, the youth in his mid-30s had managed to wriggle free and run away.

“We have learnt that the youth lives in Haridevpur and runs a business of supplying jute bags. On Monday, he had come to supply bags to a shopkeeper in Kadamtala. On his way back, he spotted the woman. A rape case has been started,” said an officer of the police station.

Some residents said the police let the accused flee while pretending to escort him to the jeep. The cops, however, denied the charge, saying he had fled by the time they arrived.
