East Bengal shocked by Mumbai FC

Calcutta: Mumbai FC scored their one of the most memorable I-League victories when they stunned East Bengal 2-1 in the Round XII tie, on Sunday, at the Balewadi Sports Complex Stadium in Pune.

The hosts had the upper hand during most parts of the game before Gabriel Fernandes drew first blood with a 64 th-minute pile-driver, beating the outstretched East Bengal goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, off Yousif Yakubu’s centre.

In a match that witnessed several rough tackles, which also involved Mumbai FC’s Darren Caldeira being taken to hospital due to serious injuries, as many as seven minutes were added to the regulation time.

However, in the fourth minute of the added-on time, ace striker Yakubu doubled Mumbai FC’s lead, sprinting down the right flank and beating two rival defenders to slot the ball home from an acute angle. Edeh Chidi fired one home in the dying moments to pull one back for East Bengal. But it was all too late by then.

The win propelled Mumbai FC to 19 points as they climbed a step higher on the I-League table to No. 5. East Bengal remain rooted at fourth with 21 points.
