Guwahati, Dec. 23: Assam rode a patient century by opener Kaushik Giri to pile up a massive first-innings total of 438 in 139.3 overs in the first innings on the second day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) plate group match against Railways at Rajkot today.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss yesterday, Giri scored 117 (4x15, 6x1) to consolidate the innings.
Besides, tailender Sidhartha Baruah contributed a useful knock of 72 (4x8).
Wicketkeeper batsman Wasiqur Rahman (51), Rohit Sarma (45) and Roshan Alam (43) were the other notable scorers for Assam. Tailender Mantu Das remained unbeaten on 27 (4x2).
Railways’ A. Yadav hauled five wickets for 70 runs and Aushaf Chunawala chipped in with three for 132.
Railways were reduced to 93 for three in 27.1 overs in the first innings at stumps today. Sidhartha Baruah accounted for two of the dismissals conceding 23 runs in the post-tea session today.
T. Sai Dinesh and H. Singh were batting on 30 (4x3) and 15 (4x2) respectively at draw of stumps for the day.
In Golaghat today, Jharkhand took a vital first-innings lead of 50 runs against hosts Assam on the second day of their three-day Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) East Zone match.
Put to bat first yesterday, Assam were all out for 183 in 94.3 overs in the first innings with middle order batsman Sahil Jain topscoring with 46 (4x9) and Akshay Naraine and Rio Pramanik contributing 38 (4x3) and 33 (4x4) respectively.
Zeeshan Ali of Jharkhand scalped three for 38 and Istekhar Khan and Rahil Khan taking two each for 20 and 51 respectively In reply, middle order batsman Ishan Kishan missed a century by five runs as Jharkhand pilled up 233 all out in 80.2 overs in the first innings today. Kishan’s 95 off 145 balls comprised 19 hits to the ropes.Prashant Ranjan scored 53 (4x11) for the visitors. Paceman Avinav Choudhury of Assam hauled six wickets for 71 runs and Kalam Raja chipped in with two for 26.
Assam were 24 for one in 14 overs at draw of stumps today.
Opener Urooj Rizvi and Angshuman Saikia were batting on 12 (4x2) and three respectively at close today.
