Jajpur man throws wife into well

Jajpur, Dec. 19: A man allegedly threw his wife into a well, demanding more dowry at Nuagaon village in Dharmasala last evening and also attacked his mother-in-law with a sharp weapon.

Villagers rescued the women. The accused is absconding.

Police said the victim, Sarojini Jena, 25, of Nuagaon village, was married to Sukanta Bal, 34, of Thakuranipal-Hatasahi village in Rajkanika two years ago. At the time of their marriage, Sarojini’s parents had given money and other valuables according to the demands of the groom’s side. However, the woman’s in-laws used to harass her for more dowry.

Because of the torture, Sarojini was living in her parents’ house along with her husband. Last evening, Sukanta thrashed his wife to ask her parents for dowry. When Sarojini objected to this, in a fit of rage, Sukanta allegedly pushed her into a well in the courtyard.

Hearing her cries, her mother, who was inside the house, called their neighbours for help. The neighbours rushed to the woman’s rescue and pulled her out of the well.

“Sukanta used to torture his wife, both physically and mentally, demanding more dowry and the couple had frequent quarrels over it,” said P.K. Majhi, inspector in charge of Dharmasala police station.

Majhi said the police had registered a case and were looking for the accused.
