SUV rams into truck, six die on impact

Six persons, including two children, were killed when the SUV they were travelling in rammed into a stationary container truck on Grand Trunk Road, 65km from Hazaribagh district headquarters, early on Wednesday.

Police confirmed that the vehicle — ferrying a family of four to Saundadih in Ramgarh district from Uttar Pradesh — was speeding and the driver lost control near Kesath village in Chouparan, leading to the fatal accident around 5am.

Sources said Central Coalfields employee and Saundadih resident Pappu Choudhary had sent the SUV to his native town of Kushinagar in the northern state to bring his mother Lilawati Devi (55), sister Shakuntala Devi (25) and the latter’s two children — Vishal Kumar (3) and Kumari Anshika (1) — to Ramgarh.

Drivers Ashir Khan (23) and Naseem (25) were asked to drop Choudhary’s father back in UP and pick up the other family members.

Chouparan OC Gopal Krishna Yadav said Ashir was at the wheel when the accident took place. “The highway was empty and he was speeding. Near the village, 5km from Chouparan police station, the SUV suddenly careened off the road and rammed into the multi-axle vehicle, which was parked on the side, from behind. All six died on impact,” he added.

An eyewitness said the women and children were sleeping and could not have assumed brace position when the SUV collided with the truck.

Yadav said the bodies were taken to Hazaribagh Sadar Hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to relatives of the deceased.
