Ministry to look into the AIFF elections

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday passed an interim order directing the ministry of sports to find out whether the All India Football Federation (AIFF) elections, scheduled for Thursday, were being held in violation of the government’s Sports Code.

The order came after Rahul Mehra, an expert in sports law, filed a petition alleging the AIFF elections were being held in violation of several clauses in the sports code.

The ministry had already derecognised Archery Association of India (AAI) and Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) for violating the sports code. It has also asked Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to hold re-elections for three of its principal office-bearers.AIFF general secretary Kushal Das, however, said the elections would be held on schedule on Thursday.

“A former High Court judge would conduct the elections. An observer from the ministry of sports is also going to attend the elections,” he said.
