Chief swap

New Delhi, Dec. 18: The Centre has effected a swap in the chiefs of the BSF and NSG. Acting director-general (DG) of BSF, Arvind Ranjan, has been made NSG chief while Subhash Joshi, the current NSG DG, will now head the BSF, sources said.

Surgery mess

Raipur (PTI): The Chhattisgarh government has announced a Rs 50,000-compensation each for 12 patients who had contracted infection after cataract surgery at an eye camp organised last week. About 145 people had undergone the surgery on December 9 and 10 at Bagbahra, over 100km from the capital.

Facebook duo

Mumbai: Police on Tuesday filed a closure report in the case involving two girls, who were arrested over a Facebook comment for questioning the Mumbai shutdown on the day Bal Thackeray was cremated.

Marines case

New Delhi (PTI): India has explained to Italy that the case of two Italian marines, accused of killing two fishermen, was in the province of judiciary and they will have to wait for the judicial outcome. The Indian ambassador, summoned by Rome to press for a decision before Christmas, had conveyed the message.

Indian dead

Singapore (PTI): A 25-year-old Indian construction worker was found dead in Singapore on Sunday. Police are treating the death as unnatural. Pitchaikannu Kannan from Tamil Nadu apparently fell from the third floor of a dormitory where he was drinking with his fellow residents. His body will be flown back to his hometown on Tuesday.

Anthem row

New Delhi: A complaint alleging misuse of the national anthem by Colors TV for promotion of a reality show has been forwarded to the Union home ministry, information and broadcast minister Manish Tewari said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

First marriage

New Delhi, Dec 18 (PTI): The Supreme court has said merely having a certificate of an alleged previous marriage would not be enough to hold the current married relationship a nullity till a decree is passed to that effect.

the absence of a valid decree, the apex court bench said: “The relationship between the parties is one of marriage and not in the nature of marriage.”

Forgery cuffs

Kochi (PTI): The CBI on Tuesday arrested from Bangalore a former customs deputy commissioner for alleged misappropriation of an electronics consignment sent from Kuwait in 2008. K.S. Chandrasekhar and two others had allegedly misused official positions and forged documents, CBI sources said here.

Aged parents

New Delhi (PTI): A man has been asked by a court to pay Rs 3,200 per month as maintenance to his aged parents. A judge ordered the elderly couple’s son to pay maintenance saying he cannot deny sustenance to them. The judge upheld the trial court’s order adding he should give money in the form of rent as he was living in his parents’ home.
