New Delhi, Dec. 18: Members cutting across party lines today clamoured for a clampdown on the media in the Lok Sabha in the light of allegations of paid news and the bribery charge against Zee News editors.
JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav alleged that the freedom granted to the media was being misused and demanded that the Press Council of India be given more teeth or scrapped.
“Fixing accountability on the print and the electronic media is very essential. Their freedom would endanger our democracy…. The media has been unleashed like a tiger in the jungle,” Yadav said, to applause from many members.
Before him, Congress MP Lal Singh had strongly called for checks on the media.
AIMIM member Asaduddin Owaisi asked if the government planned to set up an independent regulator for the channels, to which I&B minister Manish Tiwari said there was no consensus on this.
