Jorhat, Dec. 18: Mrinal Kr Sharma, an official of Numaligarh Refinery Limited, was arrested today on charges of raping a woman at Rajabari Letekujan area last night. Sharma, who lives on the NRL campus at Numaligarh, travelled over a kilometre to the house of a driver when the wife was alone and allegedly raped her.
According to police sources at Numaligarh outpost, the victim’s husband returned home and “caught Sharma red-handed.” The official fled the scene but surrendered to the police late last night. He was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by the woman.
The investigating officer hinted that this may not be the first time that the official had visited the woman.
A case (number 815/12 under Section 376 of the IPC) has been registered in this connection.
A medical test was conducted on the woman at Golaghat civil hospital this morning. The report is awaited, police said.
When contacted, a senior NRL official said “the matter is being looked into.”
