Saina gets top billing

Lucknow: Saina Nehwal is the top seed in wom-en’s singles for the Syed Modi International India GP Gold , starting here from Tuesday. In men’s singles, Taufik Hidayat got the top billing while P. Kashyap is seeded second. The other star attractions for the event are Ashwini Ponnappa, P Kashyap, PV Sindhu and Saurabh Verma.

Dipika wins

New Delhi: Dipika Pallikal entered the second round of the World Open Squash Championship with a 13-11, 11-9, 11-9 win over Malaysia’s Delia Arnold in Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean.

Tennis meet

Calcutta: Ishaque Eqbal beat Snehashish Mukherj-ee 6-4, 6-2 while Richie Aga-rwal defeated Rohit Ramp-uria 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the men’s singles matches of the Calcutta Gymkhana Grass Court tennis tournament on Monday. In other matches, Abhinanshu Borthakur beat Parikshit Somani 6-2, 6-3 and Manoj Sewa got past Robin Das 6-2, 7-5.

Suspension

Liverpool: Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini will serve a three-match ban after accepting a char-ge of violent conduct for an apparent headbutt aga-inst Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross during a Premier League game on Saturday.

India upbeat

New Delhi: Determined to defend the title, the Indian hockey team left for Doha on Monday to participate in the Asian Champions Trophy to be held from December 20-27. Captain Sardar Singh said: “We have very good team which is full of youngsters. We have shown is Melbourne what this team is capable of. There is a new found energy and confidence among the boys.”

No desperation

Bangkok: Adrian Sutil says he is not desperate for a drive with Sahara Force India. “In five years, I was in this team, they know how good I am,” he said.

Dhaka: Bangladesh have agreed in principle to tour Pakistan early next year and become the first team to play international cricket there since March 2009.
