‘For great players, there is always more leniency’

John Buchanan

John Buchanan didn’t offer any advice to Sachin Tendulkar. Rather, he spoke of his experience with some of the other titans. As Australia’s coach for almost seven years, Buchanan has watched Sachin from close.

The following are excerpts

“Each person is in the best position to know their own standards and how they believe they are meeting them. Sachin will be no different...

“He is one of the all-time greats and has always looked at his game, how he can improve it, and meet the standards he has set for himself...

“That’s a key reason why the greats are greats — not only do they have skill sets that are better than most of their peers, but they have constantly sought ways to improve their game...

“A number of the players with whom I was associated, like Steve Waugh, Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden, were all able to retire on their terms, i.e, realise it was time to go, and then work with the coach and selectors to make an appropriate exit...

“For the great players, for those who have represented their country for years with such distinction, there is always more leniency in reaching such a conclusion.”
