Dual posts
The high court on Monday ruled that Muktinath Chatterjee, who was holding dual posts — principal of Charuchandra College and chairman of the West Bengal Higher Secondary Council — cannot remain as the college’s principal. Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, the Trinamul MLA from Rashbehari who is also the president of the college’s governing body, had issued a notification on July 11, 2011, saying Chatterjee could remain principal despite being appointed the council’s chairman. A college student had contended that Chatterjee couldn’t hold both posts.
Fake liquor
One person was arrested in Chandni Chowk on Monday evening for ferrying 30 bottles of spurious liquor in bottles of a reputable brand. A police team seized two cartons of the liquor from Sheikh Khurshid, who had boarded the taxi from Kidderpore. The cops said an anti-tamper valve usually found on the bottles was missing.
Protest
Traffic along Jessore Road was affected on Monday afternoon after a group of residents blocked the road to protest waterlogging from a leak in the underground drains. The residents found the stretch near the Patipukur underpass waterlogged. They blocked the road for around 15 minutes from 1.30pm.
Road death
A man, aged around 64 years, was found lying unconscious on a pavement on Phears Lane in central Calcutta late on Sunday. He was taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. |
